And This One Belongs to the Reds
As the Cactus League comes to a close and opening day looms, I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” I think to myself. After all, my favorite team is the oldest professional baseball team. The Cincinnati Reds have a rich history steeped in nostalgia. You can feel it the moment you step foot in Great American Ballpark. “But what have you done for me lately?”

An Ode to Opening Day
When I have traveled across the country, taking in baseball in stadiums all over, I remember one quote that I saw when I toured what was then known as PacBell Park (now Oracle Park), home of the San Francisco Giants. The quote was from Rogers Hornsby:
“People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no
baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out of the
window and wait for spring.”

5 Players Poised For Big Breakout Seasons In 2025
It’s that time of year again- baseball is back! My predictions for last year were actually pretty good. I hope to be right once again this year. So without further ado, here are my five breakout picks for the 2025 season. This is the 3rd annual breakout prediction you can read my previous year’s predictions here in the locker room.

Paul Skenes and The Curse Of The Eternal Rebuild
Last June, Paul Skenes' debut with the Pirates was met with an unusual reaction from Bucco's fans—a feeling of hope. Pirates fans, thoroughly jaded after 30 years of budget restraints, player losses, and seasons of terrible baseball, actually dared to dream. With Paul Skenes, they had a pitcher unlike any in recent memory. For the briefest of moments…

The Broken Bat
Buck Showalter, who was in his final season as the Yankees’ manager, handed me Spike Owens’ broken bat during batting practice. I walked away that day not only with a broken bat, but also a ball that was later tossed to me by a bullpen coach.
That bat quickly became a show-and-tell favorite at school, and during the ‘90s playoff games, it served as my lucky charm. Owens’ broken bat witnessed countless magical moments throughout the Yankees’ dynasty of the ‘90s. But more than that, it instilled a loyalty in me that goes beyond fandom—it’s woven into my very being. I’m a fan for life.

Sandy's Project: Trop! In the Name of Love
Some of my best memories are from this last trip to the Trop, which happened to be only a week before Hurricane Helene hit Florida. With kind invitations from fellow Rays fan Zoe Hummel, I had the opportunity to sit in the Home Plate Club for two games—that is the closest I’ve ever been to the action at a baseball game. And even though I had seen the roof lighting the year before, I felt more drawn to it this time around for some reason (Devil Rays colors, in particular, look stunning on the Trop’s roof).

Southsider for Life
I’m Jim McGuire, and I am a White Sox fan. Yeah, that is obvious, but I figure why not start with the obvious. I will take the obvious further, though, and say that I am a proud and passionate White Sox fan. Now you may be asking how anybody can be such a fan after the Southsiders lost a Major League record 121 games, but I am, and I won't shy away from that. There have been times I have been frustrated by the play on the field.
